Large Format Tiles
Project Overview
AP Tile and Bathrooms undertook the challenge of transforming a 70-square-meter floor using stunning 1200×1200 large format marble tiles with blue streaks. This project required not only aesthetic precision but also a strong technical approach to ensure long-lasting durability and flawless execution.
Challenges and Solutions:
The existing floor presented uneven levels, necessitating the application of a high-polymer, fibre-reinforced latex levelling screed. This provided the ideal smooth base for the installation. To mitigate the risk of cracking and movement, we installed a decoupling membrane across the entire floor. Expansion joints were strategically placed every 8 meters to allow for natural movement and thermal expansion of the tiles.
Technical Specifications:
Substrate Preparation: The floor was screeded using a high-polymer, fibre-reinforced levelling compound to create a perfectly level surface.
Decoupling Membrane: A Strato decoupling membrane was installed to prevent lateral movement, ensuring tile stability and reducing stress.
Expansion Joints: Expansion joints were positioned every 8 meters, preventing tile cracking due to floor movement or thermal expansion.
Adhesive: We used a flexible, S1-rated adhesive designed for large format tiles, which provides excellent bond strength and accommodates slight floor movement, reducing the risk of cracking.
Grout: The installation was completed with flexible, high-performance polymer-modified grout, designed specifically for large format tiles. This grout offers enhanced flexibility and crack resistance, particularly important for high-traffic areas.
Sealing: Once grouted, we sealed the grout with a hydrophobic sealant, making it water-repellent and reducing the risk of staining, ensuring longevity in appearance and function.
Design Highlights: The large marble tiles with blue streaks were selected for their striking visual effect, giving the entire floor a seamless and luxurious appearance. The entrance was enhanced with a custom-designed step incorporating an LED profile, allowing for optional retrofitted lighting, giving the home a modern touch. The clean transitions between the tiles, skirting boards, and step exemplified the precision of the installation.
Craftsmanship: Skirting boards were carefully removed and replaced after tiling to achieve a clean, modern edge. Each tile was meticulously aligned to ensure straight and level joints across the entire space. We worked with a consistent 3mm joint spacing for precision and uniformity. The grout was sealed post-installation to protect against moisture ingress and staining, ideal for maintaining the pristine condition of the floor.
Results:
The client was delighted with the final result. The large format tiles not only provided a sleek and modern look but also made the space feel more expansive. The LED-ready step added a futuristic touch, perfectly blending form and function.
