Project Overview
At AP Tile and Bathrooms, we were commissioned to restore and re-tile a beautiful Victorian hallway floor in a period home near Manchester. The existing subfloor was uneven and unstable, so before any tiling began, we had to carefully strengthen and re-level the original floor to create a solid, long-lasting base for the intricate mosaic design.
Preparation & Subfloor Work
Victorian floors often come with decades of wear and uneven surfaces, so the first step was to stiffen the original timber base using additional supports and reinforced boards. Once the foundation was secure, we screeded the floor to perfection, ensuring every millimetre was level – crucial for getting crisp, even grout lines across a patterned layout like this.

Finishing & Protection
Once the floor was fully set and grouted, we applied a professional-grade tile sealer to enhance the colours and provide long-term protection against stains and moisture. This not only gives the floor a gentle sheen but also makes cleaning and maintenance easy for the homeowner.
Results
The finished floor completely transformed the hallway, bringing back the character and charm of the original Victorian era while giving it a new lease of life. The clean geometry, restored colour balance, and crisp border detailing made the space feel grand and timeless.
The homeowner was thrilled with the result, commenting on how the attention to detail and precision layout had “brought back the soul of the house.”
